About Monster Plots
Welcome to Monster Plots. Your one stop for developing
property into the best wildlife habitat around. We can help you with any
needs from picking the right seed to planting it right for a successful food
plot to tree stand or ground blinds and the hunt.
First off a little bit about whom I am, Kevin Boyer. I
started hunting deer, turkey, rabbits squirrels, dove, pheasant, quail,
raccoon, coyote and several other small game at the age of 10 years old over
38 years ago. I ran a trap line for 6 years when I was younger. I was raised
on a small farm and have been around farming my whole life. Over 28 years
ago I bought my first small farm of 44 acres. I started building the
property up so that it would feed and hold as much wildlife and the wildlife
had all they needed to be healthy and grow to their full potential. With my
prime focus on the whitetail deer, turkey, rabbit, pheasant, and quail.
Not only have I spent many hours hunting and viewing
wildlife, but also I have been filming wildlife since 1989. Another thing I
did to learn more about the whitetail deer was to buy a few to learn how
they acted, sound or calls they made, what they like to eat and what time of
the year they like some food sources over others. Back in 1988 I bought 3
one-day-old buck fawns and raised them up to the age of 7 and 8 years old. I
did this not to be in the business of raising deer but to learn more about
the whitetail deer. I tried things like planting several types of test plots
and handpicking plants to feed to them even though the deer had three pens
planted in excellent food sources for them. I even experimented with their
feed and supplements that I sprinkled over their food to see what they ate
or did not eat.
You see I live in Illinois and back then in the wild
mineral licks were legal and to put out you just couldn’t hunt near or over
them. Back when you could do mineral licks in the wild I took what I learned
from my pen deer and applied it in the woods where I hunted. I also applied
and tested the food plots in the wild to see if my pen deer were just
spoiled with all of the food they had to eat. I also spent time raising
pheasants, quail to turn loose on my farms. I know they say this can’t be
done with any success. But in my area where we had not seen many quail and
had not seen a pheasant in several years we did have more quail and some
pheasants around for a few years. I spent time building brush piles and
building habitat for all of the small game and making sure they had plenty
of food close by the cover. When it comes to hunting I hunt any day that I
am not working or have family obligations Since I work as a heavy equipment
operator out of 841 local, I sometimes tend to have late fall and winter
months off which allows me around 60-100 days to hunt and film other hunters
each year. This does not count all the days or hours I spend driving around
all summer glassing fields, shed hunting, scouting and planting food plots.
As for my planting equipment I do not sell Plotmasters or Food Plot seed to
make a living as some salesmen do. I do this because I enjoy sharing with
others what has taken me years and years to learn. Along with seminars on
food plots and hunting or consulting others on their property it keeps me in
contact with my hobby and passion of the great outdoors that the Good Lord
has blessed us with.
